Mettawee School Spirit
Thank you to all the staff and families who participated in our school spirit week. Thank you to all the soccer coaches who have supported our students this season. It is great to see the growth that the students have made the last few weeks of soccer. I have included a few pictures of our 6th graders giving their families a carnation at the last home game on Friday. Thank you to all of the families who have transported your child to the practices and games. If you have any group or team pictures of soccer, please email them to me for the yearbook.
Unity Day
We had all of our students and staff members wearing orange for Unity Day. Each Student received an orange bracelet with different messages about kindness. I shared a few important messages about how we can all be kind to each other to make our world a happier and healthier place.
“In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”
Friday, October 31st.
There will be NO SCHOOL on this day.
For grades K-6, conferences will be student led and your child should be present. In preschool, Mrs. Knipes will share how your child is doing socially, emotionally, and academically, your preschool student can be brought to the library for childcare.
Childcare will also be available for siblings. Our students and teachers have spent so much time getting things prepared for conferences and are eager to share their learning and their goals for the year ahead. Please feel free to share a goal that you would like your child to achieve this year; it could include something to do with an activity outside of school. Thank you for partnering with your school in educating your child.
Please sign up for your conference by selecting your students homeroom link below.
The deadline to schedule your conferences will be Monday, October 27th. If you require assistance with signing up, please call the school. at 802-645-9009.

Halloween Parade Expectations
Our parade will be held on Thursday, October 30th at 1:45. Preschoolers through sixth grade, along with the Mettawee teachers & staff, will walk in our parade by coming out the primary wing doors, down the sidewalk in front of our school, and we end up out back on the playground. We will sing a few songs outside before the classes come back into school. Make sure your child’s costume is school friendly and easy to put on and take off independently. Please leave the weapons, scary masks, and any extra accessories at home. Please do not have your child wear their costume to school. We will have the students change into their costumes around 1:15. Let us know if you need help in getting your child a costume.
If you plan on bringing your child home with you after the parade, it would be greatly appreciated if you sent in a note in the morning so our dismissal will be as smooth as possible.
VETERANS DAY BREAKFAST SOCIAL
Friday, November 7th at 8:30 am
Please take a moment and ask a local veteran to join your child so we can honor them with our special ceremony on November 7th @ 8:30. This is a great way for us to teach our students about our Veterans Day. In addition, the veterans feel respected and honored to stand to be recognized in front of the whole school. Please return the sheet that was sent home this week so we can have the guest sit at your child’s table. Or you can feel free to call the school and let us know if you have invited a guest to join us.
I am grateful for all the veterans who have made sacrifices by serving our country.

JISP ACTIVITY OPTIONS
Family Determined Option
This would be for families that want to pick their children up for a self-selected activity instead of a school supported JISP option. An example would be if you purchased a seasons ski pass for Bromley or Stratton.
Bromley (JISP Skiing & Snowboarding)
$150
Programs offered are: Skiing or snowboarding (grades 3-8); KAP (grades K-2); and the Adaptive Sports Program. If rentals are needed, there is an additional cost of $140. Please view the full Bromley flyer for important deadlines and information.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
(Please note you will still need to register with Bromley after this)
Scholarships available
Riley Rink ~ Ice Skating
$139
Students will be taught the fundamentals of recreational skating in a station based skating program. They will have structured lessons on the ice and free-time on and off the ice from 12-2.
Families will need to provide their child with a helmet (bike or ski). Riley Rink will no longer provide helmets.
(Please note you will still need to register with Riley after this)
Scholarships available
Merck Field and Forest Fun
No Cost
Merck Forest and Farmland Center is once again offering Mettawee Community School students the opportunity to explore and play in the forest and field right out the school’s back door. The intention is to provide students with a supervised outdoor experience with Merck Forest staff and Mettawee faculty.
Hildene's Greenhouse
$150
Join us for afternoons spent exploring Hildene’s farms in winter. Despite the cold temperatures, students will find that the greenhouse is quite warm, and plants are thriving. While tending to these plants, students learn how food can be grown in winter. Over at the barn, the animals are not sleeping away the winter and they too need to be cared for. Students will spend time helping with barn chores and interacting with the animals. Of course, there will be time for fun in the snow and farm crafts.
(Please note you will still need to register with Hildene after this)
GNAT-TV ~ Mediamaker Club (Grades 3-8)
$150
Ready to bring your creative ideas to life and experience the thrill of working in a professional television studio? At GNAT-TV’s Mediamaker Club, you’ll dive into the world of media production. Whether you’re interested in producing your own show, creating viral online content, or growing your storytelling skills, this program gives you the hands-on experience to make it happen.
Participants will learn essential media production skills, from TV and audio production to green screen techniques and podcasting. You’ll develop practical knowledge that you can immediately apply to real-world projects, while working in a collaborative, creative environment.
(Please note you will still need to register with GNAT after this)
Southern Vermont (SVAC) ~ Art or Theater Program
$150
(Please note you will still need to register with SVAC after this)

Below is a message from Bromley regarding Ski Passes:
The Bromley Outing Club and Bromley Mountain are excited to share with your schools and families our 2025/26 JISP Day options for skiing and snowboarding and Bromley’s Local Student Season Pass.
Please note there are two attachments to this message. One is for the BOC JISP and KAP programs, the other is for Bromley’s Local Student Season Pass—two separate programs with unique student benefits.
The JISP and KAP programs include instruction, a pass that lets students ski and ride during lesson time through the end of each lesson day as well as 13 Sundays, and offer an incredible rental seasonal program at a reduced rate. The details and benefits for JISP are noted in the attached PDF.
The Local Student Season Pass offers an incredible value for students to ski and ride anytime at Bromley. Purchase details are included on the attached PDF. The Local Student Season Pass is not needed to participate in JISP or KAP.
JISP and KAP pricing remain the same as last year, at $150 for JISP and $250 for KAP (BRSU students pay only $150 for KAP thanks to local funding). Our goal is to make skiing and snowboarding accessible to students while supporting healthy outdoor activity and a lifelong enjoyment of winter sports. The JISP program is a cornerstone of our community partnership—helping students learn, grow, and form friendships on the slopes.
Mettawee is excited to announce that our December All-School Musical Play will be
The Rainbow Fish Musical
A large-cast undersea musical adventure!
Script, music and lyrics by Austin Zumbro
Adapted from the award-winning picture book, The Rainbow Fish, by Marcus Pfister, the magical, colorful world of the deep blue sea comes to life with a universal message of friendship and belonging.
This musical features a variety of charming school fish and sea-creature characters who admire the famous Rainbow Fish, the most beautiful fish in all the ocean, for its shimmering, shining scales. Rainbow Fish doesn’t want to swim with the other fish and doesn’t know how to make friends, but with the help of Little Fish and the wise Octopus, Rainbow Fish learns that it’s far better to be admired for being kind than for being beautiful.
Tryouts for speaking parts grades 4, 5, and 6 will take place on Tuesday, October 28th. The Performance date is Wednesday, December 10th, save the date!
We are always looking for volunteers to help with acting, scenery and costumes. If you are interested, please contact Lisa Hoyt, Music (lhoyt@brsu.org) and Amy Harris, Art (aharris@brsu.org).
Basketball SIgn ups went home in Big Blue Folders this week
This Fall, our students and staff take frequent adventures on our adjacent Merck land. Because ticks are also out and about this time of year, please make “tick checks” part of your daily routine. Ticks should be removed promptly if discovered anywhere on the body. If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Mayer at school or your primary care provider.
Planned absences must receive prior approval in order for the absence to be excused. Without prior approval, the absence will be considered unexcused. To request approval, the Excused Absence Request form must be filled out and signed by the principal, student, and parent/guardian. The family is responsible for proposing a learning plan, which the student will complete as a result of the planned absence, and submitting it to the principal for approval.
