From The Principal's Desk...
As part of our ongoing efforts to keep our community safe and in following the guidance from Vermont’s Agency of Education, Department of Public Safety, Vermont School Safety Center and the newly adopted school safety legislation (Act 29, Title 16 VSA, Section 1481), we will be practicing a variety of emergency preparedness exercises throughout the coming academic year. These exercises are designed to keep our community safe when responding to a critical incident. These drills include building evacuation drills or fire drills. During these drills, our aim is to empty the building of occupants as quickly as possible, and then account for every community member. These drills usually take less than 10 minutes with little impact on the academic day.
Another procedure we will be practicing this year is our options-based response to an active threat protocol, Run-Hide-Fight. This protocol empowers staff and students with response options during an active threat situation based on what they know about the situation. We will be conducting one options based drill in the fall and one options based drill in the spring. Each options-based drill will be announced to the parent/guardian community no later than one day prior to the drill being conducted. We will be conducting our first options based drill in October. We will also have a fire drill this week and another one the first two weeks of October and it will happen no later than October 18th.
We have included a family letter about school safety that will be shared with you electronically and in paper form today. Please take the time to read this information. The handout reviews the language that we will be using when we have our drills to prepare our students and staff when we have different safety scenarios that can occur. The State of Vermont has asked the schools to adopt new policies on school safety that have been approved by our school board this summer.
Vermont State Law Title 23 V.S.A. § 1285 requires school authorities conduct school bus evacuation drills twice a year for any student who is transported in a school bus. This includes students who ride the bus to and from home as well as those who may ride it during a field trip, sporting event, or other school related activity. We will have these evacuation drills from the bus once in the fall and once in the spring.
We have reviewed the emergency emergency response protocols as a staff. Some of the safety terms have been changed and we wanted you to see them listed on page two of the handout. The important message that is stated on the last page is to make sure that you do not rush to the school if there is an emergency. You need to wait and listen to directions on where and when we would pick up your child. We also ask that you do not call your child or staff during these emergency situations. It is important that we practice these school safety drills to be sure we are prepared. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns about our school safety expectations and procedures. School violence is not something anyone wants to think about, but we must do the best we can to be prepared for as many different emergencies or potentially unsafe scenarios as possible. Thank you for your support in this effort.
