Flood Brook School

Roaring Tiger

Volume LVIII, Issue 1 September 9, 2023

From the Principal:

Dear Flood Brook Families,

Welcome to our first edition of the updated Roaring Tiger!  This new format comes with our new website which is intended to help streamline our communications and create systems across all BRSU schools that are using the same programs.  We hope it meets everyone’s needs and does what it is intended to do!

In our second week of school many students have begun their fall i-Ready reading and mathematics benchmark assessments which will provide us with students’ current skill level data which we use to inform our classroom instruction.  Teachers have also begun their first units of learning, including the use of the BRSU’s new literacy curriculum called Into Reading in grades K-6 and Into Literacy in grades 7 and 8.  We have been hearing positive reports from teachers about this new curriculum!

Speaking of curriculum, we will be hosting a Curriculum Night on Wednesday, October 18th at 5pm.  This event will be for adults who are interested in meeting with the classroom teachers to learn about the curricula they will be using this year, their units of study and overall plans for the year.  We are working with the Collaborative to have childcare available, please stay tuned for more details!

We also want to let you know that we are getting a new floor for our gym!  The construction is scheduled to begin next week and is likely to be a six week project barring any unforeseen issues with the subfloor.  We are in the process of obtaining a large tent to put up by the fields in case of inclement weather.  Of course Mr. Weikart is excited to continue with his PE classes outside everyday, so please be sure to send in rain gear and/or an extra layer when appropriate.  If you would like assistance getting any rain gear or extra layers, please let us know and we would be happy to help you!

Lastly, thank you to those who have taken a few minutes to complete our community survey.  We have 18 responses so far.  We would love for more folks to share their thoughts with us about Flood Brook School so we can continue to grow and work together on our school goals, vision and mission.  Click on this link to complete the survey: Community Survey

Thank you all and have a wonderful weekend,

Johanna Liskowsky-Doak

Principal

Resources and Head to Toe

Hello FB Families,

Welcome back!  We are delighted to see our students and families once again, and we hope that you had a restful and fun summer.

Flood Brook School partners with a range of organizations that support families who are experiencing financial hardship.  If you would like to speak confidentially with one of our staff who can connect you with these resources, please reach out to Brooke Paxton, Rebecca Blake, or Jessica Berg.

One such resource is the Stratton Foundation's Head to Toe Campaign, which has arrived once again.  If you are interested in receiving support in accessing winter gear (coats, snowpants, boots, hats and mittens) please fill out this form.  Applications are due by Thursday September 14th.  If you have any questions about this program or clarification around what is being asked for please reach out to the staff listed above.

Thank you and we look forward to working with you this year!

Wellness Corner

Dear Flood Brook Families,

Welcome Back! I am happy to be back as the nurse here at Flood Brook. I have missed all of the children and it is so nice to see them and receive a warm welcome back.

I wanted to let families know that I will not be answering emails outside of office hours and will respond the following school day. I will also be available via phone with questions or concerns at 824-6811 ext 5104 between the hours of 8-3:45pm.

As you may know, BRSU has a new website and we are working on a health page that is currently “under construction” where you will be able easily access a variety of information.  Here is the link to our updated Illness Procedures.

It is very important to fill out our Annual Health Update form. If you haven’t already, please take a few minutes to complete.

Wishing you all a wonderful and healthy school year.

Kind regards,
Jessica Berg, RN

Physical Education News

We are very excited to announce that the gym floor and air exchange system will be replaced starting next week (9/10) through October.   Physical Education classes will spend most of their time outside until November.   This means students will need to come prepared for outside class on PE days rain or shine.  Students should come prepared with sneakers and weather-appropriate clothing.  I will try to give weekly updates on project progress and what the plan will be for class until the construction is finished.

Thank you for your continued support and if you have any questions please feel free to email me at mweikert@brsu.org.

South Derry Library Celebrates Dot Day

Children of all ages ( and their grown ups too) are invited to celebrate Dot Day with art teacher Casey Junker Bailey on Saturday, September 16 at the South Londonderry Free Library. The free program begins at 10:30 a.m.. Everyone is encouraged to dress in dotty fashion. There will be a variety of creatively dotty activities and each family will receive their own copy of The Dot to bring home, thanks to a generous grant from the Stratton Foundation.

The South Londonderry Free Library is joining over 26 million children and adults around the globe in 200 countries and sovereign territories to celebrate International Dot Day – a grassroots “creativity and courage” movement, started in 2009 by a teacher in Iowa. Inspired by New York Times best-selling author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds’ classic storybook for all ages The Dot, International Dot Day inspires young and old to embrace the power of personal creativity to help make their mark on the world, and move it to a better place.

For more information about this delightfully fun activity and our monthly programs for kids, contact the Library at 802 824-3371.
